FOLKLORE
The kolo is a circular dance form in which the dancers follow each other around in the circle. The kolo is one of the basic forms of Croatian folk dance. The circle dance is regarded as the oldest form of dance, in which people express their desire for communion. Due to its simplicity, this type of dance is widely spread. Throughout a large part of Croatia right up until World War II, the kolo had been the centre of village social life. The kolo was both a dance and a social gathering. It was the main place where young women and men could get to know each other, express their sympaties, make pledges of brotherhood and sisterhood, and also provided an opportunity for mockery and social criticism.
