RED LAKE

Red lake is a sinkhole containing a karst lake near the city of Imotski. The Croatian Speleological Federation organised international speleological expedition in 1998. during which was measured altitude difference of 528 metres and the depth of the lake was 287 metres. According to some information, that would be the deepest lake in the Europe. It is presumed that the lake emerged when the ceiling of a large cave hall collapsed. According to the legend of Gavan and his palace, in ancient history there was a palace which collapsed and in that placce the lake emerged. Its name - Red Lake - comes from the color of surrounding cliffs. On September 28th 2013 new measurements were conducted with a submarine and the depth of the lake was 255 metres.


BLUE LAKE

Blue lake is one of the most beautiful karst lakes in Croatia. The water level significantly oscilates during the year so there are years when it is completely dried. In situations like this you can play football at the bottom of the lake. During summer period there is usually enough water in the lake for swimming and you can also play different water sports. A special care is taken of quality of water and tidiness of the beach . There is a legend of origin of this lake called Gavan’s palace.


FROG EVENING

Unlike many places in this area, in which people organise fishing parties, people in Zmijavci went one step further and organized frog evenings. Over a thosuand people from Zmijavci together with their friends from all over Croatia enjoyed in frog specialties, and you could also find eels and freshwater crayfish on the menu. The night was hot and the boys from tambura orchestra Garavi were warming up the atmosphere so if you needed cooling you were given draft beer and you could also jump to the nearest canal where you could catch frogs and win great prizes.


GANGA

Ganga is a traditional folk song. It is a form of polyphonic singing in Croatian folklore. It is sang in area of Imotski, west Hercegovina and in the areas of Duvno and Livno. The lyrics of ganga are written in decasyllabic, characteristic for croatian folk songs. Ganga was declared as a cultural heritage by the Croatian Ministry of Culture and therefore became a part of protected cultural legacy. There are similar forms of singing: rera, ojkavica (ojkalica) or orcanje.



FOLKLORE

The kolo is a circular dance form in which the dancers follow each other around in the circle. The kolo is one of the basic forms of Croatian folk dance. The circle dance is regarded as the oldest form of dance, in which people express their desire for communion. Due to its simplicity, this type of dance is widely spread. Throughout a large part of Croatia right up until World War II, the kolo had been the centre of village social life. The kolo was both a dance and a social gathering. It was the main place where young women and men could get to know each other, express their sympaties, make pledges of brotherhood and sisterhood, and also provided an opportunity for mockery and social criticism.



RIVER VRLJIKA

There are plenty of other karst lakes in this area and some of them are rich with fish, but they are not different from other karst lakes around the world. Dry, hot valley – The field of Imotski (1ookm2 of grape-vine) is watered by river Vrljika. Vrljika is like a blood-vessel to this area. The best sports program is to see the whole river all the way to the nearby village which is located 2km away – walk through it, swimm, climb over small waterfalls with the forest and the sound of birds and water around you. Amazing, perfect life aphrodisiac, just the thing you need to charge your batteries.



VANTAGE POINT TOPANA

With the fall of the Turks in 1717., the Venetians come to the throne and they establish borders with the Turks. This border remained to this day and it delimitates Imotski and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Venetians call it acquisitio nuovissimo. During this entire period, the belvedere Topana near Blue Lake, which was once the military strategic place and today favourite place for people in love, remained well preserved .


GREEN CATHEDRAL

„The green cathedral” – the green cathedral is the folk name for the church outdoors. It is located in Proložac Donji, near the river Vrljika. Natural ambience with the river, the church and the greenery offer a unique sensation of beauty.
